A smart lock adds codes and remote access. It does not remove the need for a physical key, and it is worth knowing that going in.
The genuine upgrade a smart lock offers is control: individual codes you can issue and revoke without rekeying anything, a log of who came and went, and in most models the ability to lock or check the door's status from your phone. For a family managing kids, a dog walker, or a short-term rental, that is a real improvement over a single shared key.
The caveats are just as real and worth planning for rather than discovering later. Every smart lock still has a mechanical key override, because a dead battery should never lock you out permanently — keep that backup key somewhere you can actually reach. Remote features depend on your home wifi and the lock's own battery, both of which fail eventually, usually without much warning. None of that is a reason to skip a smart lock; it is a reason to keep a physical key on hand and not treat the app as the only way in.
